One Question Friday

Every Friday I’m going to ask a question. The questions I choose might be ambiguous on purpose. The goal is to have you answer the question according to your beliefs, where you’re at in life or a circumstance that might have recently impacted you. The only thing I ask is that you provide an explanation for why you answered the way you did.

It is my hope to understand you better through this and also to gain a greater understanding of humanity and how people make decisions.

Which do you enjoy reading more…

Commercial or Literary Fiction?

  1. I cannot possibly answer that!!! It totally depends on my mood. If I'm in a "let's-take-this-slow-and-soak-up-beautiful-language-mood" then literary all the way. Me love me some good literary fiction. However, if I'm craving romance or some time where I don't have to think, I can just get lost in a page-turner....then probably more commerical.

I love them both, so long as they are well-written and captivating. :)

  2. Commercial. Absolutely. :-)

Regarding Literary...I like beautiful prose but I don't usually care for literary plots.

  3. I would have to go with commercial...although I'm actually not much of a fiction reader. With commercial fiction...you can expect to experience something that arouses real emotions, and most of the time, expected endings. But with literature...well, you never know what to expect or if there will be any type of "closure."

By the way, in response to my blog...you CAN be a spoon! There's more than one way to serve up the Gospel! ;)
    God bless!

  4. I'm definitely a commercial fiction gal. I can't ever keep my attention focused on literary fiction. What does that say about me? Maybe I should keep that too myself. Too late, huh?

Hope you are doing well, Wendy! I've been thinking a lot about you.

  5. I'm not really sure what the difference is exactly, but I do know that I'm a big fan of grammer and well articulated writing. Not the kind that is necessarily complicated to read, like The Great Gatsby (that book drove me nuts), but books that are clear, interesting, and well composed. The Great Gatsby was beautifully written, but half the time I didn't know what was going on. The Hobbit on the other hand... I love that book! And Peter Pan! Beautifully written and fun.

  6. First pick, commercial, but enjoy literary too.

  7. Commercial. I'm a sap for action, adventure, and true love! :-)

    Have a great weekend, Wendy!

  8. I just HAD to stop in and answer this question (and also say that I miss reading your blog :D).

My answer is both, which is the first time I have EVER picked that answer for One Question Friday - at least as far as I can remember.

It's definitely all about my mood. My first pick is usually commercial but every once in awhile my heart and mind wants to settle into something deep, poignant, sweet and moving.

  9. Tough one! I like both, but if I HAD to pick one, I'd choose literary. I have a huge admiration for people who can put words together beautifully, who go beyond just conveying a thought or action, and make their words their art form. Still, I want a story involved. I can't stand the type of literary fiction that wanders down every rabbit trail because the writer likes the sound of himself on paper. Beautiful story + beautiful words = happy reader.

  10. Commercial. I read literary sometimes, but in my pleasure reading, I tend towards genre fiction.

  11. I read both, but for the most part I prefer commercial fiction. I like feel-good stories, and that's easier to find in commercial fiction.

  12. Commercial. I love a good romance with a solid plot.

  13. Commercial. I like the structure, but I have been known to enjoy a couple books that might be more on the literary side. That mood rarely strikes, though. :-)

  14. I'm going to answer a 3rd option (sorry Wendy) - Literary Integrity. I'm glad there are people who still like books and buy them and read them! I think the pictures are peaceful - makes me want to go grab a book and start reading it right now (and I think I will). wb

  15. I think I'm going to go with commercial with a literary bent. I love the way you can tell stories with beauty and grace and still have them appeal to a lot of people and have fast-moving plots.

    So both. ;-)

  16. Commercial. I like my plot handed to me on a silver platter. I don't want to have to search for it. :)

  17. I'm probably more commercial. But I like literary fiction in small doses or in films...:)

  18. Easily commercial. I like pulp and like a fast pace. Is that bad?

  19. Sometimes I have a hard time defining literary. But each has its place.

Some have said my writing comes off as literary, but I'm just not sure.

  20. Wendy:
I believe Commercial. I have a hard time reading anything that is from the early 20th Century. I also had a hard time reading "The Great Gatsby" but in the end it the ending was easier to understand than the movie.

  21. I like both. Can I have it both ways??
